Coburg has one of the best outdoor velodromes in the State, and the only one in the metropolitan region that is olympic sized.
Despite that, we see relatively few of our riders participating in club track events.
Track is tough, and fast, and while only taking an hour out of your day (and only a 20 min ride from the CBD), it can leave you just as sore as any road training session can. Most importantly, it is an adrenaline rush, and a hell of a lot of fun.
Use of the velodrome is free, readily available at most times of the week, and on Wednesday nights, coach Sam Gebert takes a serious amount of time out of his day to train and teach any riders who come along to our twilight track sessions….
And so I challenge the members of Coburg Cycling Club:
Come to Wednesday night training at the velodrome between now and the end of the year.
Use the Club bikes (or your own), and genuinely give it a crack.
If you actually find you don’t like the sport, then that’s absolutely fine… but let’s not be the Club with the amazing facilities, who won’t try them out because ‘I am a road cyclist’. Even road cyclists have to train (no traffic lights, no cars, no unplanned stopping – sounds like perfect road training to me?).
If these guys can do it, then I figure you, and we, can do it too:
Yep – night racing at our velodrome used to be broadcast on ABC… the old broadcast tower still stands.
On Wednesday evening, the 10th of December we will hold our track Championships.
There will be 3 events: a sprint, a pursuit and a scratch race, so we are catering everyone from the sprinter to the enduro to the time trialist. An accumulation of points will determine the winner.
The BBQ will be going and the eski full. If the weather dare fail us, we will push it back a week to the 17th, so please keep both dates penciled.
